What is a Browser?
The browser allows you load samples into your channels. For more information on the browser, read The Basics Explained.

What is a Channel
Channels are where you load your samples into the sequencer. The FL Slicer is also a channel, and there are many other included effect/instrument channels as well.

What is a Mixdown?

A mixdown is the process of creating either a full mp3 or wav file of your song. You can also export them to individual samples, so you can re-load the sequences in Pro-Tools for example.

What is a Mixer?

The mixer allows you to add effects to your individual samples or the whole beat itself. It also allows you to EQ the whole beat or compress the beat as well.

What is a Pattern?

Patterns allow you to create a whole song versus a single loop for 4 minutes. Each pattern will usually consist of 4-8 bars, where you can add breaks, bridges, gaps, silent parts, and even intros/outros. For more information on patterns, or after you create all your song patterns read Using the Playlist.

What is a Playlist

The playlist is the arranger of your patterns. This allows you to create a whole song from the 2-4-8-12-16 bar patterns you created.

What is a Sequencer?

The sequencer allows you to trigger your samples to play during a certain section of the sequence. This is your main module that you will be working with. For more information on the sequencer, read The Basics Explained.

What is Filtering?

Filtering will “kill” or remove certain frequencies within a sample. For example, if you want just the bass from a sample you would use a low-pass filter versus a high-pass filter if you just want the treble. For more information on filtering, read How to Filter.

What is Clipping/Peaking?

Clipping or peaking is when you hit 0 on the spectrum analyzer(or peak meter). When you hit 0 with digital recordings, the song will begin to distort to the point where it can pop speakers. It’s vital that you monitor your song to make sure it’s not peaking, and if it is you need to either turn down the sample causing it(usually bass), or use the Soft-Clipper to minimize it. If the bars inside the monitor window begin to turn red, this means clipping is occurring. To add the Soft-Clipper into your Mixer read Adding Mixer Effects.

What is a Sample?

A sample is a piece of audio which you use inside the sequencer. It can be as short as a single snare hit, or as long as 16 bar loop. To use a sample within your sequence you assign it to a channel.

· How do I Chop a Sample?

There’s more ways than one to chop a sample, however I prefer using the FL Slicer, or chopping my parts piece by piece with Cool Edit Pro. The quickest way is with the Slicer, and although it is limited(compared to manually chopping) it gets the job done 90% of the time. For more information on how to use the Slicer, read How to load samples in the FL Slicer.

· How do I make a Sampled Beat?

To make a sampled beat first you will need a sample. Start digging through your crates of record, and go out and buy some old records. This will also educate you sub-consciously, and even if you have no musical experience you will begin to understand how music works. Although it might only take 15-20 minutes to create your beat once you have your sample, take your time when your listening to them dusties. Once you find a break or piece that you want to sample from that record, then record it to your computer, and save it as a wav file. You now can load your sample into a channel or the FL Slicer.

How do I Compress my song before a mixdown?

You can assign the Compressor effect to the Mixer’s Master Channel, but keep in mind this is not professional compression. It’s best if you mixdown a raw wav to compress inside a professional studio/audio program(e.g. Pro-Tools)

How do I Copyright my song?

To officially copyright your work visit www.copyright.gov . You can also hit F11 for Project Info inside FL Studio. This isn’t an authenticated copyright, but it can be used if you ever run into a legal problem.

How do I use the Soft-Clipper?

After adding the effect to the mixer just lower the threshold knob until your song stops clipping.

Why do I hear crackling or skips when playing back my song?

If it’s not coming from your sample, then chances are your computer isn’t powerful enough to run the program to it’s fullest potential. It could also be your soundcard that went bad or it’s just too old to support full duplex sound. If your system memory is lower than 512MB then upgrade that as well.
